World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February to raise global awareness about the value of wetlands, which include rivers,marshes, swamps, mangroves, peatlands and coral reefs. Wetlands for Disaster Risk Redcution is the theme in 2017 to highlight the important role of wetlands in reducing the impact of floods, droughts and storm surges. 2 February also marks the date on which the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was adopeted in the Iranian city of Ramar.
